Is Mum losing the plot? – Saturday 7th February 2026

Is Mum losing the plot?

After yesterday, I have to ask the question, is Mum losing the plot? It was all very funny afterwards, but at the time it was slightly crazy.

Mum went to see how the railway station was coming on. And on the whole the answer was’ very well’. Then the electrician asked Mum if she had the wall lights he needed to put up. Mum liked a rabbit caught stealing carrots. She had forgotten to buy the wall lights. The electrician needed to fit them. Mum leapt into action. She rushed inside, calling Dad. They needed to divide the jobs between them. After she had fed us – always her first priority, she would go to the shop to buy some lights. Dad was given instructions for while she was gone.

Racing to the shops

Mum left in a cloud of dust – or at least the equivalent on a very wet day and without the wheel spin. She was driving down the country lane to our nearest town, when a thought struck her. She had bought the lights. It wasn’t something she would have forgotten. Fortunately she had her phone so stopped to see if she could find the answer. She knew where the lights would have been bought from, so looked at her account with them. There it was, last November, the lights she should have bought – and did. So she rang Dad to get him to start looking for them while she drove home.

Emptying cupboards

Dad couldn’t find the lights. Mum began searching as soon as she was through the door. She pulled duvets out of cupboards, climbed on the stool to look on top of cupboards. Then she checked the garage and the shed. After that she took a deep breath and decided to go through the house systematically. Eventually, as a last resort she went into hers and Dad’s bedroom. She stood in the doorway and looked. That was when she saw a box under her chest of drawers – one she had no idea what was inside it. Sure enough, quietly minding their own business were the wall lights.

The rest of the day was a bit of an anti-climax. Her hunt for lightbulbs wasn’t nearly so entertaining. Let’s see what she can do today!
