The sound of silence – Friday 13th February 2026

The sound of silence

I think I like the sound of silence. You have no idea just how noisy household appliances are until all the power goes off. Yesterday morning, once Mum had stopped the house alarm from beeping at us all – which was frankly very distressing – it was then bliss. Our house was totally silent. There was no fridge or freezer making constant noise. All the wireless signals were off. No one boiled the kettle. Honestly, I thought it was wonderful. I even discussed with Mum whether we could maybe have some rooms in the house as quiet spaces. She liked the idea, but I don’t know how we’d achieve it as I think the heating makes some noise and I don’t want to turn that off altogether.

The weather

“Today’s going to be dry, Wilma.” If I had a Bonio for every time Mum said that, but it rained, I’d be a very fat dog. Every day it rains. Every single day. The weather app on Mum’s phone will say fine, when there’s a heavy drizzle. It seems to say ‘rain likely in 40 minutes’ when it’s pouring down outside. Enough! The ground is full! It’s like someone left the bath tap running and it’s overflowing everywhere.

I had to wade across the rose garden earlier. Ok, so I could have used the path, but even that is underwater in places. We keep thinking it can’t get any worse – but we’re wrong. Mum and I are desperate to get out and do some real gardening, but neither one of us is keep to get soaked to the skin in the process. Would the weather gods please have just a little bit of compassion?

Now the forecast says it will rain again today, but be dry tomorrow. I have all my paws crossed – which frankly is going to make gardening quite difficult.

Love and licks

Wilma
