A bit of excitement
We had a bit of excitement on Tuesday night. To be fair, I had already climbed into bed when it all kicked off, which was the best place to be. Mum and Dad were in the kitchen. Pebbles had just gone to bed, so she wasn’t bothered except by everyone else’s excitement. At almost exactly 9pm the lights went out, the fridge went off – to be honest, everything went off. Suddenly we had no electricity. Mum, who would make a good boy scout, promptly set up some lamps that she charges from USBs so she and Dad could see what they were doing and then set about reporting the power cut from her mobile phone.
Local news
Whilst the website for the power company tried to claim there was nothing wrong, Dad went outside to close the gates. Dad bumped into one of the neighbours and found out what was actually going on. Just along the road from us, about six houses along, an oak tree had fallen right across the road and brought down the power lines. There were fire engines and about half a dozen vans of engineers all scratching their heads.
Anyway, the lovely engineers worked through the night to reconnect the wires to all the houses near us and we eventually got our power back eight and a half hours later. The road itself is still blocked and now a tree has come down across another local route. At this rate we’ll be cut off by trees rather than floods.
In the meantime
In the meantime Mum got very little sleep. There were the times the house alarm went off to make sure we knew it was on battery and then when its battery ran out. The texts from the power company to say they were sorry and had no idea how long it would take. The lights coming on when the power returned, due to not having been turned off. All in all, Mum wasn’t at her best yesterday.
