Naming Pebbles – Thursday 14th November 2024

Naming Pebbles

Naming Pebbles is not as easy as it sounds. Obviously, we want to call her Pebbles. In our breed though there is a tradition that a breeder starts each litter with the next letter of the Alphabet, starting with A for their first litter. Aristotle was from Mum’s first litter as a breeder with Shadow, so he had an A name. Shadow’s litters covered A, B, C, and D. It means if Pebbles successfully qualifies to breed then she will start with the E litter. Anyway, Pebbles is coming from a breeder who is on their second litter of Entlebuchers so her name needs to start with the letter B. The observant amongst you will realise that Pebbles does not start with a B.

The Flintstones

In the Flintstones cartoon, Pebbles is the daughter of Wilma Flintstone (and Fred obviously). The son of Barney and Betty Rubble is called Bamm-Bamm. Now, although Pebbles’ Mum is called Betty, Mum thinks it would be asking for trouble to call an Entlebucher Bamm-Bamm.

It then becomes more complicated as The Royal Kennel Club limits the total number of characters in the name to 24. That has to include the Kennel part of the name. In Pebbles case the Kennel is 11 characters long, so by the time you’ve had that and the spaces between words and included Pebbles as part of the name, there are only 4 characters left. Mum has suggested we go for the easy option and simply have B-Pebbles. It will only really matter on official documents, so she’ll always just be Pebbles at home.

Alfie’s real name was Einstein and Shadow was Aisha, only Aristotle and I have been known by our real names, so Pebbles will be just fine. It’s not the sort of name that can be abbreviated, much like Wilma, which I like.
