Things just get worse

Well, things just get worse around here. Poor Mum needs to take some time off. It’s the only explanation I can find. I’ve suggested she and I just curl up together for a few days until the world rights itself. That seemed kinder than pointing out that it’s Mum who seems to have fallen off her axis.

The latest problem is the bread. Mum makes her own. While we don’t get to eat it, we can appreciate the smell, so are very supportive. Normally it goes quite well. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn’t.

Ingredients

I’ve watched Mum and it looks pretty simple. She just throws in some flour, salt, sugar, butter, yeast and water and out of the bread maker comes a loaf of bread. Sadly, her last loaf proved a little more troublesome. She threw everything in and set the bread maker to work its magic. Five hours later it beeped to say it was done and Mum got the oven glove to remove the loaf.

That was when we spotted the problem. Mum had forgotten one vital ingredient – the water. In the bottom of the bread maker was a lumpy mass of flour. The sugar had crystallised into lumps that would break your teeth. The butter had caused the flour to clog together in places, but it was basically lumpy flour.

Never give up

Mum is not one to give up and she hates waste. She convinced herself that if she sieved the flour to get the worst of the lumps out then she could start again. Once again she added all the ingredients and this time remembered the water. Please don’t try this at home – it doesn’t work. The resulting ‘loaf’ bore more resemblance to a brick with jagged edges. Mum tasted a little and sadly that didn’t go well either.

Except for taking care of us, Mum is relieved of all duties until further notice. I’m not even sure she should be taking care of us.

Love and licks
