Most Improved Player
Mum voted me her Most Improved Player at training yesterday. Ok, so it was a personal vote and I was the only candidate, but I still appreciated the sentiment. To be fair, Maisie’s Mum was saying how far I’ve come on too and our lovely trainer congratulated me too. There was a time when Mum couldn’t so much as drop my lead without me going to cause havoc in the neighbouring puppy class. Yesterday we did most of our work with me trailing my lead and Mum by my side.
The art of games
Mum has learnt that I hate obedience, but I love games. So we turn everything into a game. The one that has really worked well with is ‘send to bed’. On instruction I have to go and sit or lie down on a selected spot. We are supposed to take a bed or piece of vet bed for me to lie on. I’ve never been good with that. I get over excited and try to kill it. That isn’t just about training classes, I do the same at home quite regularly.
One of the games we play is for me to put my front paws up on something ‘hup’ or all my paws on something ‘hup hup’. I have some little stands in the garden and find it huge fun when we do it. Mum has simply turned that into my send to bed command. While everyone else is telling their dogs to go to ‘bed’ or similar, Mum is pointing to the spot required and saying ‘hup hup’. I do it every time, from several paces away.
Circuit training
At the end of class yesterday we did a circuit or fun things. I had to go ahead of Mum to sit on one, lie down on the next, go over some poles, across a raised surface, weave through some cones and then sit in the middle of a hoop. Oh and put my paws up on a wobble cushion part way around. I aced it. To be it didn’t feel like training at all. It was fun.
Just to keep Mum happy I tried hard at the stay too. I managed 42 seconds before I moved first time, which is my all time record. During my two minute stay, I only actually moved three times altogether. Mum was so proud of me.
