Going to Oakley Woods – Sunday 27th September 2026

Going to Oakley Woods

Going to Oakley Woods was interesting. Some of it I really enjoyed, but some of it I was less keen on. There were lots of good smells and to begin with I was really enjoying having a sniff. I always get bored with that though. I have no idea why. There was one point of the walk where I found a smell I didn’t like. Mum was watching me and asked what had alarmed me, but I couldn’t explain. I was quite jumpy for a while after that, but did eventually settle down.

Going in front

I was definitely happier on the walk going in front of Dad. It wasn’t in a ‘pack leader’ kind of way. I think it was more that I like to be able to see clearly what’s ahead of me and Dad was blocking my view. Mum found it weird that I wouldn’t simply go around Dad when I wanted to go ahead, but I think that was a in a ‘pack leader’ sort of way and I wasn’t sure I was allowed to go around him.

Stumpies

There were some good stumpy opportunities, but I’m only just learning about those. Seeing photo opportunities isn’t something that comes naturally to me. Mum is teaching me how to look at the camera, but it’s all pretty new to be honest.

The best things about the walk were meeting other dogs and people. I said hello really nicely to everyone I met and Mum and Dad were really proud of me.

Comparing walks

At the end of the day though, I definitely prefer the racecourse. For one thing I met more dogs going round there. More important than that I preferred it being more open and not so dark. I found some bits of the Oakley Woods walk were a bit scary, although Mum reassured me it was all fine. Maybe I’d like it more on a sunny day. I know Mum loves it there and Wilma used to rave about it, but I’m undecided. I may be trying the village circuit today it will depend on the weather later on.
