A new challenge
Mum has set me a new challenge. Overall she thinks my training is going reasonably well. So she has asked me to think about when I get out of the car. I acknowledge that at the moment I am desperate to come out of my crate when we stop the car. That means I don’t really think about what I’m doing. Mum has explained that she wants to be able to take me with her more of the time. Tat means she has to know I can get out of the car safely. It would be no good me running from the car into traffic, or to knock an unsuspecting person over for example.
At the moment, Mum has to be able to catch hold of my harness so she can reattach my lead. This is an improvement on how I used to be, when frankly Mum would become very stressed as I was so hard to get hold of before I bolted.
Now Mum wants me to pause and think.
A New Mantra
When the car stops I have to remind myself to be patient. Apparently I need to remember that it won’t always mean I’m getting out and if I’m being left behind I must not scream blue murder. That’s a shame, as I quite enjoy that one and hate being left behind.
Then when Mum does come and open the back of the car I must sit quietly and patiently while she sorts my things out. And when she opens the crate door I should wait for my lead to be clipped on before I jump out.
Honestly, that is way too much to remember. When I’m excited I go temporarily insane for fear of being left behind.
Mum seems to think that because my ‘wait’ has improved in training, I might be able to apply it to a car situation. This is going to take a while!
