Flat pack – Thursday 19th February 2026

Flat pack

Today is a flat pack sort of a day. The furniture for the railway room is going to arrive and need building. Aristotle used to like helping with furniture building. He would sit on the floor amongst all the parts and try to work out exactly why our humans found it so difficult. I take a different approach. Knowing how difficult these things are for humans, I stay well out of the way until the point they call for emotional support. That is my cue to step in and lick them better until they are ready to carry on. This will be Pebbles’ first real experience of flat pack furniture. She’s excited about helping. I have a horrible feeling that her help will not be required and she’s going to have to bounce off in disappointment.

Here’s a thought

Now here’s a thought. Both Mum and Dad have a desk to build. Their desks are basically similar. The only difference is that Mum has drawers on one side and Dad has a cupboard. I think we should arm each of them with the requisite tools and then set them up in their own little Olympic race. Which of them can complete building a flat pack desk first? If Alfie were around today he’d be taking bets on the outcome, but I’m not a betting dog. I’d probably back Mum but with a good chance they would also have fallen out before the desks were actually finished.

The next stage

The next stage is going to be something to run the railway on. Mum is supposed to be making that. The last I saw she was trying to find somewhere to buy it from ready made as she doesn’t think her woodwork skills are good enough. I’m guessing this part of the process could take a very long time.

Love and licks
