Genetic traits
I’ve been learning more about some of my genetic traits. Some time ago, I did a DNA test with a company that then analyse it and tell me about my health, relations and behaviour. Wilma told you a little about it at the time, but then recently they have come back with new insights so I’ve been looking at it more closely.
The first exciting thing is that Wilma’s friend Logan is a relatively close relation to me, with 26% of our DNA in common. The funny thing is that Logan’s human has said he shows some similarities in behaviour, so sorry about that! The other Entlebuchers listed are part of my extended family with no more then 14% of our DNA shared at most.
Traits and Behaviour
It may take me more than one day to tell you about the traits and behaviour as it’s soooo interesting. Physical traits first and although a lot of this is typical of our breed I hadn’t really thought about it being specific genes. I am a ‘low shedder’. Obviously Mum had explained that we don’t moult as much as many dogs, but I didn’t realise there was actually a ‘low shedding’ gene and I have both copies of it. Mum says she expects that to be true of our breed in general, which is one of the reasons we can be good for people with allergies.
Floppy ears
Who knew that there was a gene for floppy ears? I just know that our breed has them. It’s no real surprise I have both the genes for floppy ears then. It was just something that had never occurred to me. I also have one copy of the gene for hind dewclaws. Even Mum hadn’t thought about that being to do with specific genes. That is one that some of us have and others don’t.
I’ll tell you about the behaviour stuff tomorrow. In the meantime I’m off to examine my body and make sure all the bits are in the right places.
