A hard day – Sunday 7th July 2024

A hard day

Yesterday was a hard day. I could hear my cousin Flossie. I could even smell that she was here. Obviously when Mum walked me round the garden later, I could smell all the places she had been. I just didn’t actually get to see her in the flesh. Mum made matters worse by telling me how pretty she is and telling me all about what she’d been doing. Frankly, I thought that showed a lack of sensitivity on Mum’s part.

The spring

When I’m talking about the spring, I don’t mean the season. I know the weather isn’t great, but I haven’t got as far as forgetting it’s summer. I’m talking about the water in our garden. It hadn’t stopped being wet even though we had had a few days of the weather being dryer. Now it’s rained it is definitely very wet again. What is interesting is that where the well was, Mum had filled the middle with more soil last year, so it was a slight mound. The middle has sunk quite a long way. Mum is guessing that the movement of water underground is taking some of the soil with it. Either that or the ants have been very busy indeed. Either possibility is a worrying one.

Excavation

Mum is wondering whether at some point she should start excavating the well in order to understand what is going on. I think she should just keep filling it in and try not to think too much about it. I have a horrible feeling she might not like what she finds if she starts digging, quite apart from the fact that it may leave it unsafe for me. We have no idea when it was filled in, but it was probably quite a long time ago.
