Persistent Pigeon – Saturday 13th July 2024

Persistent Pigeon

We have a persistent pigeon. Mum thought that the pigeon who moved into the outside gazebo had been murdered, but if it had then another one has taken her place. Last week was wet miserable weather and we weren’t around the garden quite so much. That proved long enough for the pigeons to build a whole new nest on top of the heater and lay some more eggs. They clearly weren’t going to mess about. Earlier in the week, Mum asked Mrs Pigeon to leave and she at least made a show of flying off the nest and out of the gazebo.

However, when Mum asked on Thursday it was an altogether different matter. Mrs Pigeon simply stared defiantly back at Mum, wiggled her bottom to get more comfortable and then looked straight ahead. She did not move.

Battle of wills

It’s going to be a battle of wills between a very determined Mrs Pigeon and a soft-hearted Mum who hates to move her off a nest of eggs. Dad has pointed out that they have not installed the gazebo to be an oversized pigeon house. Of course, he’s right, but I’m not sure Mrs Pigeon has read that part of the script. I see this as an ongoing problem. Mum is already wondering whether she should install a dovecot in the garden, but that would probably remain empty, just like the duck house.

I guess you have to look at it from a pigeon perspective. Which would you choose – A small dovecot, or a large gazebo with a good view on all sides?

Murder of crows

Sadly, at the other end of the garden the killing of the birds has continued. We’ve now found the body of a crow. At least I think it was a crow, it might have been a blackbird that had grown to oversized proportions. It was hard to tell as the head was missing. I really don’t think this is down to a cat, but something is targeting our garden birds.
