The definition of we
I’m having some difficulty with the definition of we. I always thought it meant Mum and me. It’s an easy mistake to make. As you can imagine, if Mum says ‘We’re going to an engagement party,’ it’s reasonable for me to look out my best collar and lead and expect a night out. When she said ‘We’re staying in a hotel overnight,’ I went to get my pillow and best bed and added them to the pile, along with my favourite dog bowl.
It’s a poor show when the ‘we’ she had in mind was herself and Dad. Oh I needed my bed, but not my best one. I was going to kennels for the night. To be fair, it wasn’t just any kennels I was going to. It was my favourite kennels, the one we used to go to in North Yorkshire. And thinking about it, a night at Derrings with dog friends, was probably more my style than a hall full of humans.
Seeing friends
What was a surprise was to find Finn and Mack, two friends from our old village, staying here too. When I say ‘friends’ I think they are a bit wary of me. We always got along fine, but Shadow had a go at one of them a long time ago and a dog can never be too careful. They are a lot quieter than I am, but then most dogs seem to be.
Mum and Dad had the opportunity to see one or two of their friends too, which they really enjoyed. I know it’s been three years now since we moved, but we do all still miss our old village. It really was, and still is, a very special place. It’s a strange thought that Pebbles will never have known it as home.
