Flying ant day
Weirdly there is a thing called Flying Ant day in the UK. I don’t know whether other countries have something similar, but we have flying ant day. It seems that on one particular day, flying ants all seem to set off to start new colonies. Although there’s one day called that, it can be anytime over a few days. In our garden it happened last Wednesday. It was when Mum was watering the plants. She got as far as one particular rosemary bush and there were simply hundreds of flying ants. Mum thinks they were living in the pot. She went and fetched the used coffee grounds and put them all around the base of the plant. It discourages ant activity. It won’t have stopped all the ones in the process of taking off, but it will help to protect the plant from those left behind.
Pebbles’ pen
Mum has a dilemma. When she set up a pen for Pebbles, it was only ever intended to be a temporary thing until Pebbles was old enough to know right from wrong. Mum reasoned that once Pebbles was about six months old she would be able to make correct choices. Those would normally include which things she could chew and the fact she was not supposed to go in the pond. As you will have realised, unlike the rest of us, by the time Pebbles was six months old she still wasn’t making the correct choices.
This month Pebbles will be nine months old. She still isn’t making correct choices. At some point Mum is going to have to take the pen down, to get the garden ready for her party, but she is thinking of putting the pen up afterwards again. Pebbles is much happier outdoors than she will ever be in the house and it does give her somewhere safe to play. It keeps her out of my way too, so I’m all in favour!
