Supporting Switzerland – Thursday 9th July 2026

Supporting Switzerland

Obviously, I’m supporting Switzerland in the world cup. I know I’ve lived in England since I was seventeen weeks old, but I was born in Switzerland and I carry a Swiss passport. On top of that, I’m a Swiss breed and it’s my favourite place in the whole world – at least the bits I’ve been to. I found their penalties on Tuesday was completely claw biting. For the quarter-final there’s a bit of a problem. There is no way in the world I can stay awake until the time of the match.

To be quite honest, I’m at an age where it’s hard to stay awake once I’ve had my breakfast, but the middle of the night is definitely not going to work for me.

Pebbles says she’d rather be out playing football than watching it, although she does follow the action on the screen very closely when it’s on. I think she’s always looking for ways to improve her game.

How many nationalities?

You’d be surprised how many nationalities Mum can try to claim an association with when it comes to team sports. Basically, everywhere she has ever lived is considered fair game. It’s worked out rather well for this world cup and she lists England, France, Belgium and Switzerland as being her teams. That gives her someone to support in each of the quarter-finals. When Alfie was alive, he of course supported his own country of birth, which was Belgium. He lived there rather longer than I did in Switzerland.

As to what happens if two of them get to play each other, I’m not quite sure. I do know that she will always support England over anyone else, but after that I have a sneaky suspicion that she’ll be joining me supporting Switzerland.

Tonight however, we will be cheering for France. Mum said that the English don’t normally do that, but since when has our household been normal?

Love and licks
