Emergency planning
One or two things have got me thinking about emergency planning this week. Many of us are now in parts of the country which are in drought, other countries are in the same position and it’s worrying. Three things have especially brought home how important this can be. Earlier in the week, one of Mum’s friends in the US had to evacuate with the mum and three puppies, due to a wildfire risk. Another in France is not far from one of the current major fires and having to watch carefully.
Then on Tuesday, Mum was driving home from a quick outing to the shops and drove through thick smoke near our nearest motorway junction. As the crow flies, that is only one mile from where we live. When Mum came home she went upstairs to see where exactly the problem was, and then walked down the lane opposite to get a better picture. The good news was that the fire seemed to be quite small and the wind was blowing it away from us and not towards us.
Thinking ahead
Mum said we should think ahead. Obviously, the longer it is dry the greater the risk. If like us you are surrounded by farmland, it is not a good prospect. A couple of years ago there was a fire in a field only a couple away from us and with everything so dry, something like that can spread. Mum is asthmatic, so the smoke could be as much of a problem as the fire itself.
We agreed with Mum that the bare essentials are our medication, food, water and of course Pebbles’ sloth. If Mum told us we were heading out, we’d get those, put our leads on and be ready to pile into the car. Apparently, Dad will take a little longer as he came up with quite a list of things he didn’t want to leave behind, but we’d be in the car within minutes should the need arise.
There’s just one very small problem. We don’t know where we’d go. Mum said I shouldn’t worry as she has a couple of ideas, so I’ll leave that to her.
