In the duck house – Saturday 7th November 2026

In the duck house

Never mind being in the dog house, here it is more a question of what’s in the duck house. One side of the duck house was sinking into the pond and as a result the house part had slipped to a precarious angle. Dad managed to get it out, but Mum was waiting for our annual pond maintenance visit to find out what the problem was. It turns out there was something growing underneath on one side of the platform. That was pulling that side down into the water. Once removed it should have floated properly, but it doesn’t. I suggested there might still be some invisible weed weighing it down, but no one took me seriously.

On the bright side, the pond is now much clearer, so there is room for the ducks to swim if they could possibly come back. I can’t really remember them, but Mum seems particularly keen. On the downside, the water is still quite low and we haven’t had enough rain to fill the pond back up.

Photo opportunities

Mum says she needs some photo opportunities for me. Granny is now in a residential home and although Mum visits her at least a couple of times a week, I don’t get to see her. Each week Granny receives a family newsletter so Mum has asked me to help with some photos of me to go in it. One problem is that I don’t like a) sitting still or b) doing what I’m asked to do. Mum is invoking the power of cheese, but I think it’s going to take more than that if she wants me to be really good. I’m asking for a full steak dinner as my opening bid, but I guess I’m willing to negotiate down to just the steak.
