An eventful walk

Mum and Pebbles had an eventful walk yesterday. To be fair, life with Pebbles is always eventful, but some times are more so than others. When they set off, Pebbles was doing reasonably well and even sat at the kerb when asked. That’s a first for setting off – normally she is so full of excitement she is all over the place and deaf to commands.

Mum took her on her normal quiet route. Except it wasn’t so quiet. First of all Mum could see a big tractor coming towards them. There was enough time for Mum to get Pebbles to the next gateway and find somewhere for her to sit quietly and wait for the tractor to go past. Pebbles did quite well, but was off like a shot the minute the tractor went by and didn’t see the following car. She almost ran straight into it, but fortunately Mum pulled her back.

Then there was a van

Then there was a van. Mum had just turned around with Pebbles and it was coming up behind them. There wasn’t time to get to a gateway, so Mum tried to take Pebbles to the side of the road. For reasons known only to herself, Pebbles froze and simply lay down in the road. As it was only single track, that didn’t give many options. Mum tried to coax her to the side but she wasn’t budging. Pulling her doesn’t work in that situation as that’s when she risks backing out of her harness.

There was only one thing left for it. Mum scooped all 24kg of Pebbles up under one arm, while holding tightly to her harness with the other, and carried her to the side of the road. The van driver said that watching her doing that made his day. Pebbles didn’t bark or otherwise misbehave and the man thought she was adorable. Mum said she didn’t know she could pick up that much weight under one arm – her back is a bit sore, but she’s ok.

Then there were the horses

Mum felt that had been quite enough, but she was wrong. They then met four horses. Two were being ridden and two were being led. This time Mum did get Pebbles into a gateway and she was well behaved and quiet as they went by. The funny thing was the walk back was really easy after that, as Pebbles was very happy to sniff the road the whole way that the horses had walked. That only left crossing back to the other side to get to our house.
