Terrapins
What is it about terrapins? Mum seems to have suddenly developed a thing about them. I caught her looking for terrapin Christmas decorations to put on the tree. Why? It had to be asked. Terrapins are not an animal I associate with Christmas… or anything else now I come to think of it. Actually, that’s not true, my sister Tosca’s family had terrapins in their pond, but apart from that it is not something I normally come across. Until now.
It all started with Mum singing Christmas carols. She was having ‘a moment’. The line she was trying to sing was ‘Cherubim and Seraphim thronged the air’, which of course comes from ‘In the bleak midwinter’. Anyway, all Mum could think of was ‘Cherubim and Terrapins thronged the air’ and so she starts looking for a Christmas Terrapin to go on the tree. I worry about her.
Glorious mud
Our bleak midwinter is resulting in a mud-bath of a garden. I suspect the water has now totally saturated the ground and that from here on we can look forward to garden streams again. Unfortunately, Pebbles and I seem to be treading rather a lot of mud into the house. At some point someone is going to have to wash the floors, but at present none of us is showing any great enthusiasm. Mum has suggested tying rags to our paws after we come in, so that we can do some of the cleaning as we go round. She has pointed out that it is mainly our mess. I pointed out the bootprints that are way bigger than our feet and she shrugged.
At this point Mum may be thinking that looking after terrapins would be rather easier than we are and she may well have a point – although I think they hibernate, which is a whole different problem.
