Pieces of wood – Saturday 11th April 2026

Pieces of wood

Pebbles and pieces of wood is a dangerous combination. There is nothing she likes more than running off with a piece of wood so she can have a good chew. The problem is that not every piece of wood wants to be chewed. If I’m being honest, no piece of wood actually wants to be chewed, but there are degrees of resistance.

The dead branches that fall off the tress aren’t too fussed. Mum would normally gather them up and either pile them in the corner for the hedgehog, or put them in the green bin. If Pebbles has a few of those then it’s not a big deal. With Mum’s carefully saved wood pile we are on less certain territory. Mum made sure that any wood that the builders had left over went on her store pile and not in the skip. Little by little she is finding uses for it, not least of which is trying to repair our compost bins.

Going to far

Yesterday, Mum had a new vegetable trough delivered. It may take a few days before she has time to build it. The problem is, where can she put the pieces of wood in the meantime to keep them safe? As soon as Mum carried it all through into the back garden, Pebbles started to eye it up. Realising their vulnerability, Mum has put the smaller pieces in the greenhouse, but it won’t take Pebbles long to find them there. What could possibly go wrong?

I certainly think Mum would be better to build it without Pebbles being around to help her. If I’m helping then the most unhelpful thing I do is give her advice on how to do it better. Pebbles would definitely be tempted to take some of the pieces away and wait to see how long it took Mum to notice.
