My humans are mean – Thursday 6th August 2026

My humans are mean

It turns out that my humans are mean. Yesterday, they worked as a team and cleared up all the fallen apples. Obviously, I couldn’t have eaten all of them, but I was enjoying choosing from the best of them. When I complained Mum actually laughed. She said the way it was going there would be more on the ground by the end of the day. Knowing she’s probably right and being happy about the situation aren’t the same thing. For one thing, we don’t have as good a crop this year. For another, I suspect that Mum and Dad will be clearing them up again soon.

Worryingly, the dry weather seems to be meaning the trees are dropping far more of the apple crop than we’d expect. You might think that’s a good thing, but I like to have my apples spaced out over a long time so I can enjoy them every day for months. It isn’t looking so promising this year.

Brambles

What is weird in our garden is how the brambles seem to be able to grow without water, but the plants can’t. Mum has pointed out that the weeds seem to be growing too. Our grass is completely dead, but the yarrow in the lawn is growing nicely. Mum doesn’t mind the yarrow as that’s good for the compost, but it’s not soft and lush to roll in like grass is. There is one patch of grass under the trees in the orchard that’s not completely dead. Pebbles and I are taking it in turns to roll just there. We’ve agreed that we won’t use it for going to the toilet, so that we can both get the most pleasure out of it. That message has not reached the neighbourhood fox, but we both have no objection to a little fox poo, so it’s not the end of the world.

Love and licks
