Wait and Stay – Wednesday 16th September 2026

Wait and Stay

Wait and Stay just aren’t my things. They do not come naturally. In reality I just don’t see the point of them. Training yesterday went really well if you leave those exercises out. My walking to heel and sitting close my Mum’s side are second to none. I can stay focussed on Mum as we weave around other dogs, or through obstacles. I can do the fun stuff like ‘touch’, ‘middle’, ‘round’ and ‘through’ but I cannot wait or stay. My head says ‘this time we’re going to do it’ but my butt just says ‘wriggle and move’. My butt always wins.

Missing my friends

I was missing my friends in the class. Maisie was there and she’s cool, but she’s not so much into rough and tumble. Toby is too well behaved. He’s a Shetland Sheepdog and to be honest he seems to look at me with a certain amount of disdain. Mum seems to find it funny, but I don’t. We have two new sheepdogs but I haven’t really got to know them yet. You could tell I didn’t feel the same excitement as I didn’t do commando crawl once. Mum says it will get better and I’ll make new friends. I do hope she’s right. Some of the puppies will move up to join us next week, but although I said hello to them yesterday, I’m not really sure they are ready for me.

High-stepping

The trainer said that I had a beautiful high-stepping walk at one point and that many a show dog owner would be envious of it. Mum said she’d take me in the showring if she could be sure I wouldn’t just head butt the judge. I said she should worry so much as I was sure judges were used to it. She didn’t seem to think that was the point. I think I’d like to have a little go if Mum would consider it. Maybe we could do some practicing. I wouldn’t have to wait or stay for that, so I might be able to get it right – give or take the occasional head butt.
