Goodnight and sleep tight, Wilma
Goodnight and sleep tight, Wilma. I won’t be able to fill your pawprints, but I will do my best.
The day before yesterday, Wilma was clearly distressed and in pain. Her eye lubrication wasn’t working anymore, her arthritis was much worse and the insulinoma was progressing. Mum took her to the vet because her breathing was very rapid and shallow. Unfortunately, none of the things causing pain were going to get any better. Mum thought that to sedate her with more and more pain killers just didn’t seem fair. Mum had to conclude that doing that would be simply for her benefit and not really for Wilma’s. Mum and Wilma came home and talked it through with Dad and agreed it was time.
A final goodbye
Mum spent much of yesterday sitting with Wilma. They were enjoying being close and just knowing the other one was there. Then at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon, Mum, Dad and Wilma went to the vet. Mum and Dad held Wilma’s paws as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge to be with Alfie, Shadow and Aristotle. Mum said she thought Wilma’s birth mum, Susi and her sister Valeria would be waiting for her too as well as her many friends.

What was lovely was another of the vets who has treated Wilma came in to say her own goodbyes. She said how lovely Wilma was to care for and what a wonderful dog she was. Mum said it was nice to know just how loved Wilma was by all who met her.
Mum’s sidekick
Mum said without her sidekick she feels as though a limb is missing. The house is really quiet. Mum isn’t talking and it’s very strange. Dad looks lost and needs to cuddle me a lot. It’s all going to be very strange. My life is going to change a lot without Wilma around, but Mum says we can talk about all that later. For now she just wants to think about Wilma and be left alone.
