Stay
Let’s be honest, stay is not my strong point. To be fair, yesterday good behaviour was not my strong point, but let’s start with the stay. As my trainer says ‘all I have to do is stay in position for two minutes’. You’d think I could do that. Even to a dog 2 minutes isn’t a lifetime. Ok, so it’s like you sitting still for a quarter of an hour, but Dad doesn’t move for far longer than that. Anyway, yesterday at training I simply couldn’t do it. I tried – not very hard, but for me it was a lot of effort. I manage 5 seconds. To be fair, there were several lots of 5 seconds, but that was my longest at one stretch.
Better activities
There were better activities for me. I wove through a course, sat, lay down, and even managed totally perfect stops. That last one is where I have to wait to be called and then part way back to Mum she shouts ‘stop’ and I have to plonk my little bottom down on the floor at the exact point she shouts. I think I did that one because I felt so bad about the stays. I don’t normally manage to stop at all. Anyway, one thing that we do find is that I will wait as long as I can maintain eye contact with Mum. If she turns her back then I worry she’s leaving me and go after her. If she’s walking backwards focussed on me then we’re good!
Over excited
Any gold stars I earned for my perfect stops were totally lost later in the day. Mum had been out in some new clothes. When she came home a) I was over-excited to see her b) her clothes smelled different c) I lost the plot. Boy was I in trouble. Afterwards she said she could forgive the body slam, it was grab biting her tee shirt and new dungarees that was the real problem. I only damaged the tee shirt, so it could have been a lot worse. Then I was muzzled until I calmed down. I did say sorry and was allowed to supervise the next stage of the greenhouse building. FYI – it’s not going well and it turns out there are a couple of parts missing.
