Autumn Walks
I think autumn walks are the best. Yesterday’s was simply perfect. To my surprise, the sky was blue and it felt quite warm in the sun. There are so many different colours of leaves on the trees and ground on the walk I like going on. I was able to kick my paws through the leaves and snuffle all sorts of smells as we went. If every walk was like that, I could almost start to enjoy going for walks just for the fun of it. Mum seems to think I should do that anyway, but I’ve never quite got the hang of feeling that way. I almost did yesterday. Mum said I only butted her legs really hard a couple of times, which is quite good going for me.
The other thing Mum said was that she only had to give me cheese when she was asking me to wait for cars going by, or when I had to wait to cross the road. I nearly did everything right, but apparently I wasn’t supposed to try to chase the Jeep after waiting for it to go by.
Harvesting the squash
I helped Mum harvest the squash from the big veg bed behind the greenhouse yesterday. The soil is not that good there and this year with the dry weather they really haven’t done that well. Then there was another problem. Some of the squash have teeth marks in. Something which had not left details of who exactly they are, has tried eating one or two of them. They didn’t actually get that far, but far enough that Mum doesn’t fancy eating those ones. It’s a shame, as the crop is so small in the first place. All the work that Mum put in to rotavate the soil has only made it easier to take the weeds out, but hasn’t led to better squash. Maybe next year will be better.
Fortunately, some of the potatoes and carrots seem to have done rather better, so it’s not all bad news. It’s funny, I wasn’t a fan of gardening to begin with, but I’m starting to see why Aristotle enjoyed it so much.
