New training
Pebbles is doing some new training with Mum. What Mum is trying to do is to embed one or two behaviours at a time. Pebbles still has to practice the things she has already learnt and work on the ones she needs more time on, but Mum really needs her to learn one or two things that she just hasn’t yet mastered.
Stop
The first one she is working on is ‘Stop’. If Mum says stop, then Pebbles has to stop exactly where she is and put her bottom straight down on the ground in a sit. She doesn’t need to be neat and tidy about it. This isn’t about a nice recall or a polite side by side exercise, this is about stopping in her tracks and going straight into a sit. When she can eventually be off lead when they are out, it will be useful at the first sign of danger, but we are a way off that yet. Mum is using it when they cross the road and then just at random times on walks. So far, Pebbles is getting the hang of it very well when Mum is nearby, but needs to do more work in the garden when she is off lead.
Car etiquette
Don’t even get me started on how much Pebbles needs to learn on car etiquette. Getting her into the car has improved to some extent, but getting her out is a liability. Pebbles just can’t contain herself and always wants to bolt straight out. That is of course very dangerous. Now, whether Pebbles needs to go in the car or not, every day, at least once, Mum puts her in the car. The focus is on sitting nicely while Mum gets her ready to go in and then the same coming out. Unfortunately Pebble can’t keep her lead on as she would have eten it before arriving at her destination.
The getting in is beginning to improve. The getting out has a long way to go. Thankfully, Mum is no quitter.
