Jemima and Frances – Friday 10th March 2023

Jemima and Frances

Let me tell you about Jemima and Frances. Jemima Puddleduck and Frances Drake seem to be spending a lot more time in our garden. Mum has begged me to leave them in peace and I’m doing my best, but it goes against every instinct. I feel compelled to go to see if they are there when I go outside and especially to say good morning to them first thing. Mum says I keep frightening them, but I’m sure they’ll get used to my little ways. Ari ignores them, but I just can’t do that.

Duck food

Mum throws a handful of duck food into the pond each morning for them. She sends us inside when she’s doing that as I’m as likely to go after the food as I am the ducks. She’s been trying to throw the food so that it lands on the platform of the duck house, but she’s not that good at throwing so when it lands there it’s more by luck than anything.

There’s no sign of them moving into the house, but Mum is really hoping that they might. She’s even wondering whether there’s anything more she could do to make it attractive to them.

Walking up the garden

Yesterday afternoon was really funny. Usually they stay close to the pond. We were inside watching them when Jemima suddenly marched off up the garden in the snow. I wondered if they’d had an argument. Frances stood by the side of the pond craning his neck to see where she was going. When she went out of sight he reluctantly hopped over the little fence and started marching after her. He does seem very protective of her when they are around the pond and often seems to be on guard duty while she has a nap. I hope they made up when he found her again.
