What is a dog to do?
What is a dog to do when his hearing is bad and he’s not sure if he heard a noise or not? The answer is bark. Mum is very frustrated with me. I can remember when Shadow was going through the same stage of her hearing. She used to drive us all nuts thinking there was someone at the door. You don’t expect to find yourself in the same position. That’s the thing with old age. When you look at the elderly you don’t really think they were once just like you. Especially when you’re a puppy you don’t see the link. There’s you and then there’s old. You see it as two separate things, not a progression. Until it creeps up on you out of nowhere.
On the bright side
There is a silver lining to every cloud. The one I can see for old age is that you can say ‘I’m sorry, I don’t want to do that. I need to take a nap’ without it seeming like a rude response.
‘Aristotle will you put the tools away you’ve been using.’
‘I’m sorry, I don’t want to do that. I need to take a nap.’ See it works for almost everything. At least it works unless the person you’re saying it to is older than you. Then it doesn’t carry so much weight. If they aren’t off taking a nap then you probably don’t need to either. In human years I’m now over 80, so in this house I take the napping prerogative by some measure.
A good Saturday
Today should be a good Saturday. Although Dad set off this morning for a week away with work, Mum is planning to spend the day cooking and gardening. Sounds pretty good from my perspective. I won’t be taking a nap during the cooking phase, that is certain.
