Twenty Years of Alfie’s Diary

Would you believe that today marks twenty years of Alfie’s Diary? It’s hard to believe even for me. We have written every day for twenty years except for one. That was the one when Mum was in hospital and Alfie couldn’t find the password.

On the 23rd of January 2006 Alfie came into Mum’s life as a ten week old puppy and, with some help from Mum, started to put his thoughts down on paper. Over those years he was joined first by Shadow, then Megan, then Aristotle – and of course for a while by all of Shadow’s other puppies. I arrived on the scene in 2015, not that long before our tenth anniversary. Finally, Pebbles joined us just over a year ago, but sadly she didn’t have the opportunity to know the rest of the team.

What’s changed

Over those years we’ve welcomed four litters of puppies, travelled to all sorts of places, moved house, seen our human brothers grow up and lead their own lives, and so much more. Alfie went into a radio studio to do a live broadcast. I met the Swiss Ambassador in London. Shadow was on internet television 24hrs a day with her second litter. Megan moved to a family in Germany, preferring to be an only dog. Aristotle was Mum’s constant gardening companion. And Pebbles – well, she’s just Pebbles and we love her despite everything. Mum says Pebbles is the one who needs her most of all of us.

Different characters

We’ve each had our different characters. It was Alfie who coined the phrase ‘Dog enough not to be human, human enough to be a pet’ and we think that still sums it up. I’d go as far to say that to really make it work, every dog owner has to be a little bit dog and every pet has to be a little bit human. We get along best when we understand each other’s ways.

Will we still be here in another twenty years? That I doubt. For one thing, Pebbles doesn’t stay still long enough to get the hang of being a writer. Who knows what lies ahead. For now though, we are celebrating and I’d like you to raise a glass to toast twenty years of Alfie’s Diary. Happy birthday to us.

  1. Happy birthday with a special nod to Alfie whose is responsible for me being sat here on the sofa next to my human!

    • Thank you, Dexter. In a way, he’s responsible for me being here too.
