Mum needs a dog
It turns out that Mum needs a dog. Apart from short breaks, this is the first time she has been on holiday without any of us for many years. It turns out that she doesn’t like it. That of course is both good news and bad news. It’s good, because which dog wants to think their human can cope without them? It’s bad news because whether we feel we can cope, one or other of us is going to have to accompany her in future. I would love it to be me, but sadly on my last trip to Switzerland I demonstrated that I simply can’t cope with the change of routine. Dementia and change of scene do not go well together. I know Mum won’t want to put me through that.
Come on Pebbles
All I can do is try to encourage Pebbles to cope. The reality is that a dog with ADHD doesn’t cope with the sensory overload that changes of routine bring either. Mum says she is going to see if spending even more time working with Pebbles will help, but she doesn’t want to make Pebbles life difficult either, so that may not be possible at least not in the short term.
Desperate measures
Mum found herself taking desperate measures and looking at the websites of rescue centres for dogs which needed rehoming. She is under the delusion that if she added one well balanced, adult dog to our household, then Dad might not notice. Obviously, the chance of it looking like us is slim. Dad is likely to notice. Quite apart from that, do you really think there is a dog just sitting waiting for a home who would be willing to cope with Pebbles?
I suggested she could take a Hoppig out and about in much the way that Pebbles does. Although frankly, I’ve seen Pebbles’ Hoppig and Mum may want to put it through the washing machine before she starts taking it anywhere.
