Bad news

Mum rang me with bad news yesterday. The vet has received Wilma’s blood test results and she has an insulinoma. Only around 1 in 33,000 dogs get an insulinoma and poor Wilma is that one.

Although her blood sugar seemed more stable yesterday, she didn’t want to eat and her pancreas is clearly uncomfortable. It didn’t matter what food Mum offered her, Wilma just wasn’t interested. I’ve said to Mum she can try giving her some of mine if it will help and even my cheese. Mum says my squeezy cheese might help with Wilma’s tablets. I’d like to feel I was doing my bit.

What next?

Although she could have an operation, it is not always successful and because of her other health problems the vets don’t think it’s a good idea. She would have to lie on her back for a couple of hours for the operation and given how bad her back is, she might wake up in more pain than before she started.

The only option is to manage with palliative care for a period. Mum doesn’t know how long that will be. It may depend if Wilma starts eating or not. I think Mum and Wilma are going to take it day by day and see how Wilma is feeling.

Funny moment

Mum said they had one funny moment. Wilma barks at Mum when she wants action. Yesterday, Wilma stood barking at Mum and Mum tried to offer food. Then she offered to take her outside. Eventually, Mum understood that Wilma was simply fed up of sitting in the kitchen and wanted Mum to move into the other room with her. Wilma could have gone in there on her own, but she wanted Mum no more than a paws reach away from her. Mum dutifully took her things and went where Wilma wanted to be.
