A leak in the pond – Wednesday 31st May 2023

A leak in the pond

Aristotle thinks he’s got a leak in the pond. Neither he nor Mum know much about maintaining ponds. We do know our pond has become quite overgrown and Mum and Dad have said they will spend a day helping Aristotle to sort that out. But there are more problems than it being overgrown. Now, I know it’s been dry but the level of the pond had gone down quite a long way. Aristotle put the hose pipe to fill it up on Monday and by yesterday the level had already gone down a bit – more than Mum thought it should.

Burrowing

We had a problem a while ago where something had burrowed under the paving at the side of the pond and Mum is wondering if its damage went further than we’d realised. Short of draining the pond Ari isn’t really sure what to do. On the bright side we don’t have any fish that call it home, but there are many insects, snails and frogs that do. I wondered if a part of frogs might help in looking for where we have a leak, but my croaking isn’t good enough to talk it though with them.

Ducks

Mum’s main concern in making some space in the pond is so that Jemima and Frances have somewhere to swim when they drop in. Maybe they’d stay if it weren’t so overcrowded.

I suggested they should take photos of before and after to show you, but they need to agree when they’re doing the work first. Mum seems to think it would be worth starting with research but Dad and Ari want to do the boy thing of going straight in and worrying about that later. Although Mum’s theory is a good one, she knows so little about ponds that she doesn’t really know where to start.
