Stops along the way
We’re trying to make the most of the stops along the way of our journey home. Normally, our journey is functional and we do the whole thing in two days. When I say ‘normally’ it’s been a while since we’ve done the route on a regular basis. I don’t like to say it too loudly in case I cause Mum offence, but let’s be honest, we’ve both aged a bit in the last couple of years. The idea of driving stints of 400 miles with all the time in the car that entails are less appealing to both of us. Having said that, if we had been doing it, yesterday was the perfect day for it. It was a bright dry day and there was very little traffic on the road.
Ghost town
Whilst our walk around Guémar on Friday was weird as it was as though no one had actually spotted they were living in an amazing mediaeval village, yesterday was strange for different reasons. We stayed in a place called Matougues. It’s a village or small town not far from Châlons-en-Champagne. When we went for a walk, it was like a ghost town. It just felt really weird. At one point Mum said she felt as though she’d just walked through a large cobweb. Then she looked down at my pouting face and realised I had a thick cobweb all over the side of my face and my ear. It was so weird. That was just walking along the street and must have been from some bushes.
It wasn’t completely deserted. A few dogs barked from within properties, and we heard one or two children in gardens, but there was no one at all on the streets, apart from us.
Service stations
We stopped at more service stations along the way too. Both Mum and I are better not sitting still for too long, so we both got out to stretch our legs. The only problem was that it was quite hot, so Mum couldn’t leave me in the car unless she found shade. On the bright side she has become rather more blasé about where she parks to make sure I’m ok. Yesterday she totally disregarded a coned off area, but it might be best if you don’t mention it.
Today we’ll be heading back into England, although won’t get home. That won’t be until tomorrow morning, but we’re on our way.
Love
Wilma
