Heatwave Planning – Monday 22nd June 2026

Heatwave Planning

Heatwave planning can be really important for humans, but even more so if you have dogs. Obviously you know it isn’t safe to take us for walks as the temperature rises. The ground is much too hot for our paws and quite honestly having the sun beating down on black fur is a nightmare. There is also the problem of needing a sun hat, easy for you and harder for us. It is just not worth risking our lives to take us for walks in hot weather. But there is more to planning than that.

Car journeys are not necessarily things you think much about. And as long as all goes well, you don’t really need to. But what if that’s not the case?

Car journeys

Obviously, make sure your human carries water for you, but there are more things to think about. No one wants to think their car might break down, but it can happen. If we can’t stay in the car due to the heat, if you break down you can’t leave us there either. If it’s a busy road will we panic? How easy will we be for getting out and finding somewhere to sit and wait that is safe and shady?

We started talking about this as Mum has to pick us up from kennels tomorrow. Normally she would come at around 10.30am and our journey home would be down the motorway. Due to roadworks there are long stretches without trees. Given the forecast temperatures and the fact that Pebbles and I don’t get on, Mum realised it was all going to be a problem. She doesn’t expect anything to go wrong, but it’s better to plan for these things than simply hope.

We have a plan

We have a plan, but it means doing things differently. Firstly Mum is picking us up early. Her plan is to get here for 7.30am so it is still cooler. Dad is coming with her too. She’s also planning to drive home on non-motorway roads which will take longer, but will be safer if we do have a problem. Paws crossed the planning is unnecessary, but with temperatures forecast to go up to the mid thirties, it is worth thinking about.
