Dog Safety – Sunday 7th June 2026

Dog safety

If ever there were an example of the importance of dog safety it was yesterday. Don’t worry, the problem wasn’t with us. Mum was driving to see Granny. She was on the road from the motorway going toward Leicester on a piece of road that is five lanes wide. As Mum came to a roundabout there were traffic lights and they turned to red. The car in front of Mum, in the middle one of the five lanes, had its window open. All of a sudden, a Dachshund jumped out of the window of the car into the lanes of traffic.

People, we need seat belts or a crate. It’s not only unsafe for us to be loose in the car, it’s illegal. If you can’t think of our safety, think of the fine you could face. Think of the vet’s bills if things go wrong.

Mind you, if you can’t think of our safety, why have you even got us?

Stopped traffic

Fortunately, the lights stayed red and nobody moved. Mum was about to abandon her car in the middle of the road to help with the dog. However, fortunately the man in front got out and was able to get across the next two lanes of traffic and scoop the dog up before he did anything stupid. Mum felt quite shaken. It could all have ended so differently.

Would you take a risk like that with a small child? Mum said the scary thought is that some people probably would. You’re supposed to the there to take care of us, not put us at risk. There are a whole range of seatbelts for harnesses, dog crates for cars etc. It really isn’t worth taking a risk.

Sorry, but as a dog, I just felt it needed to be said.

Love and licks
