Rogue Courgette – Saturday 11th July 2026

Rogue courgette

We seem to have grown a rogue courgette. Mum doesn’t really know what’s happening. One of the courgettes seemed to be taking all the energy from the plant and very quickly grew to a ridiculous size. Mum picked it. She said it tasted ok, but the skin was really tough. We presumed it was a one off and the plant would start growing more normally. However, we were wrong. It promptly grew another rogue courgette to replace the first one. It’s weird.

What’s going to happen next? Will the tomatoes want to get in on the act? I can’t imagine the potatoes wanting to be left out. Mum says the squash plants already resemble Triffids, so anything could happen. On the bright side, if all the vegetables grow to such large sizes there will be plenty for us to eat too.

Water for wildlife

With the weather as hot as it is, wildlife needs water. We do have a bird bath which Mum puts fresh water in regularly, but we’ve also got the pond. The water level has been going down week by week. We love seeing the swallows swoop down and take a drink in a spectacular fly past. The do circuits around the garden, swooping down for a beak full of water on route. The pigeons are less elegant. They sit in the water at the side and take a long drink and then have a bit of a flap about. Pebbles does something similar to the pigeons, but Mum gets cross with her.

There are several places where there are special stones for wildlife to sit on, or where the side is lower so they can get to the water. I just hope the water doesn’t dry up too much for them.

Love and licks
