Zoomies

Zoomies

Everybody gets the zoomies – well, every dog. I’ve not seen that many humans have the zoomies, but maybe they do too when they’re small. I had the zoomies when I was young, so did Shadow, Alfie and even laid back Aristotle. Until recently Pebbles hasn’t gone in for the zoomies, not in the traditional way. And, as it turns out that has been a blessing.

Pebbles has, in the last couple of weeks, discovered the zoomies. The problem is, given she is hyperactive in the first place, she totally loses control of what happens next. We generally ran around obstacles and just ran energy off before flopping on the floor. With Pebbles – not so much. There is only one thing to do when she gets like that – run for cover. Humans and dogs alike need to get out of the way.

Running into people

For one thing, Pebbles has not learnt that running straight into people is a bad idea. She seems to feel no pain. One of these days a human is going to end up with broken bones and Pebbles will have no idea how it happened. The other problem is that when she gets overexcited she flies through the air and grabs onto the first things she comes into contact with – with her mouth, or more to the point teeth. Usually, it’s Mum.

As Mum ducks for cover you might hear her shout ‘Fish’ in a desperate hope that the one thing that gets through to Pebbles will penetrate her excitement and have her sitting nicely expecting a sardine. Mum doesn’t always have the sardines in her pockets, but she can always get hold of one pretty quickly when needed.

We are hoping this is just Pebbles being hormonal, but Mum is going to talk to the behaviourist next week to see what she says. In the meantime, we’re stocking up on sardines!
