A time for reflection
Christmas is a time for reflection. It doesn’t matter what religion you are or what you believe, Christmas is an opportunity to think about the world we live in and our place within it. For me it’s an opportunity to count my blessings and they are many. Sharing doesn’t always come naturally to a dog any more than it does to a human, but it does no harm to think about how I can share the plenty I have in my life with those who struggle.
Mum has suggested I might like to leave the apples on the compost heap for the wildlife that needs it, rather than eat them when I am already well fed. I’m trying very hard, but I forget myself sometimes. Humans can be much the same.
Random acts of kindness
We can all go through life doing random acts of kindness. Dogs can give a little nuzzle where it’s needed. Humans can do many things to lighten the load of their fellow humans. A kind word, holding a door, giving a helping paw or hand – we can all do that as we go through life. What better accolade can we have at the end of our lives than for people to say ‘the world was a better place for our having been in it’?
Being ‘great’ is not about wealth or power. The greatest are often the most humble. They are the ones who think of the needs or others, even before their own. The ones who build others up rather than knock them down.
Choices
Every day when we get up we have choices to make. Will I be an elderly cantankerous dog who makes the lives around me a misery? Will I store up all my biscuits so I can count them and say ‘look how many I’ve got’. Or will I choose to smile. Give love to those around me, share my biscuits and enjoy seeing others happy.
When I look in the mirror, will I see a dog I can be proud of for the right reasons? Every day I hope the answer to that question is ‘Yes’.

A very happy Christmas to all of you, my friends, wherever you may be
