Old wives’ tale – Saturday 25th April 2026

Old wives’ tale

If an old wives’ tale is to be believed, then we are in for a good summer in the UK. I think it’s probably more farming folklore than any particular old wife – unless you’re counting Mum. Every year, Mum observes the trees to see if the oak or the ash comes in to leaf first. The saying goes ‘Oak before the ask, we’re bound to have a splash. Ash before the oak, we’re bound to have a soak.’ It means that if the Ash tree comes into leaf first we’re supposed to expect a much wetter summer. Mum and I have looked across the field the nearest oak and it’s significantly further advanced than the ash tree in the corner of our garden.

Whether the folklore is right or not, Mum is taking that as a good sign and is being optimistic about the months ahead. It’s keeping her happy, so who am I to argue?

Our photos

We spent some of yesterday taking photos for our entries for our Club competition. There is an ‘age’ category, which is a picture of ourselves we really like. Then there are all-age categories for ‘comical’, ‘nature’, and ‘action’. One thing became very apparent quite quickly. I don’t do action and Pebbles doesn’t do nature.

If I’m being honest, almost every photograph Mum took of Pebbles could be entered in the ‘comical’ category. Pebbles seems to spend her whole life doing comedy. She does action too, but she’s much harder to capture in the action shots as she moves so fast.

Staying still isn’t something I have a problem with. Mum had to conclude that it was moving that I was less keen on.

Seeing family

Today I’m pretty excited as my brother and niece are coming. Pebbles gets on very well with my niece and I was worried Mum would give them lots of time to play and forget that I want to see Salvo. Fortunately, Mum said that I can have some time with Salvo at lunchtime as long as I don’t mind letting Pebbles have time with Izzy later. It seems fair to me.

Love and licks
