Delegated responsibility
I’ve concluded that the answer is delegated responsibility. You may wonder what the question was. Neither Pebbles nor I can go on holiday with Mum and Dad this year. For me it’s all too much and for Pebbles – well, she’s all too much. That left us with the problem of Mum not having a dog to take on holiday. More importantly, she wouldn’t have an Entlebucher.
It was Pebbles who came up with the solution. Very kindly, she said that she could make do with three cuddly toys when Mum and Dad go away. That means that Mum could take Hoppig. Pebbles will still have Sloth, Duck and Mousse, so she’ll be fine. She will miss Hoppig, but I’m sure she’ll cope.
Instructions to Mum
Our instructions to Mum are that anywhere she would have taken a photo of one of us, she can instead take the photo of Hoppig. When we told Mum, she laughed. It was the same arrangement she had many years ago when she went to America and we couldn’t go with her. She even has a picture of Hoppig at the top of the Empire State Building, recreating a scene from the film ‘Sleepless in Seattle’.
Mum did explain that adult humans taking soft toys out and about with them can get funny looks. We concluded that she will need to take her rucksack so that Hoppig can travel to each location in that, rather than on a lead. Hoppig will feel completely at home. The rucksack is the one Mum takes to dog training, so there are bound to be spare treats in it in case he’s peckish.
I do wish it was me going instead of Hoppig, but if the weather’s hot I’d only regret it. I remember when we went to Germany some years ago, the heat made it difficult to do anything and the thunder storm was not something I want to repeat!
