Magpies – Monday 5th May 2025

Magpies

Do magpies eat peanuts? I didn’t think that they did. Yesterday, we went outside and a magpie was just hopping out of the greenhouse. Mum does store the bird food out there, although she’s been planning to move it after something spent the night trying to chew their way out of the greenhouse. Anyway, we didn’t think much about the magpie, but then later there were piles of peanut shells in a trail through the greenhouse and outside the door. I’m going to sit on guard to see what’s going on.

Liver

Mum cooking some liver to use as dog treats for training Pebbles. I wasn’t too bothered by the smell, but you should have seen Pebbles sniffing the oven. How she reacts to training with liver is going to be harder to tell. Mum thinks she might have slightly overcooked it, which may not help. We have never gone to these lengths for treats to train any of the rest of us. To be honest, I’ll work for any food whatsoever. Aristotle was more fussy, but even he could be bought with fairly low value treats. Pebbles is offered everything from dog pate, to cheese, sprats to sardines and now liver. I do hope it all turns out to be worth it.

Crawl

In amongst all the serious stuff, Pebbles is learning one or two party tricks. Her best one is to crawl. It all started when she did it at dog training, just for the fun of it. It seems she always does it on the dog training field. Now Mum is training her to do it on the command of crawl. It is quite funny, but knowing Pebbles she will only do it when it suits her.

What she has learnt in the last week is to stay. A week ago Mum was lucky if she could get Pebbles to stay for five seconds. Now we’re comfortably up to a 20 second stay, which Mum is really pleased with. There may be hope for Pebbles yet.

Love and licks
