Compost
To Pebbles’ delight, Mum spent yesterday moving compost. Barrow-load after barrow-load of it. Pebbles didn’t help. She spent her day playing in the compost bin. Every time Mum wheeled the barrow down the orchard to the vegetable bed, Pebbles couldn’t resist going into the open front of the bin. It didn’t matter that Mum had told her not to do it, Pebbles took no notice. Mum gave up trying to tell her in the end and just tried to make sure everything was left safe for her. I couldn’t believe just how much soil the vegetable trough can take. Mum has almost emptied a whole compost bin and it has hardly covered the base. We have to dismantle the compost bin once it’s empty and Mum said there is a little more we can get to then.

When I say ‘dismantle’ it’s more a case of tapping it gently and it will fall apart. The whole thing is rotten – as is the next one along. Once that one has been emptied too we’ll start building some new ones. I just know Dad will be suggesting using string.
Sunflowers
We’re very excited. Some of the sunflower seeds have germinated and there are little shoots breaking through in the plant pots. Now we’ve started planting the squash seeds too, which is only a little later than Mum intended. It will be the dahlias next, but I think it may be a few days before we get onto those. We’re also going to have to buy some tomato plants, seeing as Mum managed to kill the tiny ones she ordered. She’s reminded herself never to buy the ones that come through the post as she killed them the last time she did that. Mind you, I think she reminded herself that time as well.
We really do need to get on with all these jobs as I checked on the potatoes a couple of days ago and they are going to be ready to plant this week too. Mind you, I think Mum was hoping to put them in the vegetable trough she’s only just filling with compost – so we may have a problem.
