Dogs in hot weather

Dogs in hot weather can cause all sorts of problems. It’s not so much the things you can plan for, but the unexpected that can be an issue. Tuesday was a perfect example. The outside temperature was about 33 centigrade on the day I went to the specialist. They said I should be ready to go home around midday. We didn’t have to leave for kennels until around 2pm, so there was time to go home, have lunch and collect Pebbles. Then things became complicated.

I needed extra sedation which meant the process took longer and my recovery was longer. I wasn’t ready to go home until later. When Mum rang at midday they thought it would be about 3pm before I could go. As we would have to pass the specialist on the way to the kennels Mum would under normal circumstances pick me up on route.

The reality

But then the reality dawned. Mum couldn’t have left Pebbles in the car for even a minute or two to come and pick me up. You always know these things won’t be a minute or two anyway. If Pebbles were a normal dog, Mum could have brought her inside to pick me up. However, Pebbles is not normal. And no way could Mum hold us both and keep us apart and pay my bill.

Option three was for Dad to give up his afternoon to come for the ride. Fortunately he agreed. Then Mum got a call to say I was ready earlier than they’d said, so she came to get me immediately. I wanted my lunch, so was much happier with that arrangement. Dad had completely accepted he was coming along and was disappointed he wasn’t needed. He came along for the trip to the kennels to keep Mum company anyway, which was lovely.

Anyway, my real point is that when you have pets and you go out in hot weather, you need to think not just about your original plans, but your contingency plans if things go wrong. When it gets as hot as it’s been recently, we really don’t want to be out in it and can get overheated very easily. To be quite honest, we’d prefer to be left at home if at all possible.
