The three bears – Sunday 31st May 2026

The three bears

Coming home from kennels felt a bit like the story of the three bears. Who’s been sleeping in my bed? Ok, so no one actually slept in my dog bed, but there were smells from other people having been in the house. I had to do my best to go round and sniff them out. It was hard. I asked Mum if I could go upstairs to the bedrooms where people had slept, so I could get better individual smells. Because of my back she wouldn’t let me. After a while I picked out that two of the people are regular visitors to the house, but that the other two were new.

Once I’d finished sniffing and added cat to the smells, I sat down to ask Mum to fill in the details. You’ll be pleased to hear that the cat didn’t actually come to the house. It was more ‘residue of cat’ I could smell than the real thing.

Frustration

My biggest frustration was that Mum said the cousins of hers who hadn’t been before are dog lovers. They were really disappointed that we weren’t here to greet them. They might not have said that if they’d met Pebbles, but that’s another matter. The problem was that they were all going out for too long to leave us at home and we were back to the old chestnut of it being too hot to leave us in the car. Whilst I might be fine for pub meals, Pebbles would almost certainly liven things up for everyone. Sometimes that’s a good thing – and sometimes…

Mum has promised that if they come again we won’t go to kennels. But as they live in Australia, it might not be as soon as she’d like it to be.
